For Immediate Release:
YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP: HELPING STUDENTS PLAN FOR LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL
DANE COUNTY– Over 570 local businesses have partnered with the Dane County School Consortium to give Juniors and Seniors the chance to try their hand at an occupation through Youth Apprenticeship.
Students are paid for working and are required to take courses that complement their internship, holding them to a high standard of excellence in school and the workplace.
Josh Fassl, Director of the Dane County School Consortium says, “It’s a win-win. The students get hands-on experience in an occupation that they are interested in before graduating and paying for college.” YA helps students to gain critical knowledge and to determine if they want to stay in a particular field. “For our employers, it gives them a chance to build a pipeline of potential long-term employees and the support to ensure positive work habits.” Over 85% of employers keep their Youth Apprentices employed after completing the program.
Students can choose from programs such as, Agriculture, Architecture/Construction, Arts A/V, Finance, Health, Hospitality, Information Technology, Manufacturing, Marketing, STEM or Transportation. Each program has pathways that break down into specific areas of interest further specializing the experiences that the students are able to have. Mason Thompson, a Youth Apprentice from New Glarus, has been working alongside Scott Sowl at the New Glarus Nursing Home, in New Glarus. Thompson says “YA is an excellent way to jumpstart your career in high school. The Apprenticeship has helped me achieve an excellent start to my career pathway in Healthcare.”
